Carnifex Press Novella Submissions

PLEASE NOTE: On April 15th 2008 we will be closed to ALL submissions until further notice! Stay tuned for the next reading period!

We have been receiving several book proposals each day, and we appreciate anyone taking the time to submit to us... we feel our guidelines aren't too stringent and we don't ask for much... three chapters, a synopsis and enough WOW! to get us to keep reading. Simple enough, right?

Unfortunately, we have been receiving stories well out of our range to release whether it is word count or the first (or second) book of a trilogy.

To reiterate: we cannot and will not read anything over the 65,000 word range (novella-length) and even this is a push, as we are more comfortable in the 50,000 word range. We are looking for novellas, not novels. On the shorter side of the word count, anything under 20,000 words is a push... again, if it is in the 50,000 word range it is ideal.

Further, we will not be reading anything that is part of a trilogy of books, as we cannot and will not commit to releasing several books unless we feel there is a market for it, and so far Carnifex Press has not been that market in sales.

We do accept snail mail submissions BUT... we are in the midst of getting a new PO Box, so kindly send all submissions via e-mail ONLY... when the new snail mail address is ready we will post it here! please include a word count and cover letter with your 3 chapters and synopsis. You don't have to include an SASE if you give us an e-mail address as we prefer to contact you with acceptances/rejections that way.

Also, from this moment forward we will reject unread any novella sent that has not followed the simple guidelines we detailed (three chapters - the first three - and brief synopsis)... we have been getting the regular e-mail and Carnifex YA e-mail address filled with entire manuscripts and, in one case, an eager writer who sent us all four of his 100,000+ word books (each that length) that clogged us up for a day or so...

Sorry to be testy, but we want to use our time trying to find other gems in the slushpiles...

Send all queries/proper submissions to:

Payments:

We do NOT offer advances on novella submissions, but we do offer a twice-yearly royalty of 10% sales as well as an author discount for purchases.

UPCOMING ANTHOLOGIES

We are currently NOT looking for short stories at all... keep checking back here and in the NEWS section for upcoming themed anthologies

Carnifex Metal Imprint Submissions

We are looking for unique novella-length (20,000 - 65,000 word) books to release, whether it is fiction or non-fiction. The common theme is that it MUST be about Heavy Metal in some way, whether it is about a particular Metal band, a book about specific genres in Metal, a specific history about Metal, or a book about a specific time-period... we want to see some Metal books, get it?

Same guidelines apply (see to the left) and you can use the snail mail address as well, but we prefer ideas first in an e-mail to:

carnifexmetal (at) gmail.com

Carnifex Young Adult Submissions

We are still actively seeking novella-length (20,000 - 60,000 word) submissions for our Carnifex Young Adult line of books... just follow the same exact guidelines as other Carnifex Press releases (found to the far left) but send ALL submissions/queries to carnifexYA (at) gmail.com only, and send them care of the Carnifex YA editor, Frank Leblanc.

We are looking for something for the young adult market, whether it is fantasy, science fiction or horror... age-appropriate would be ages 10-18... we are looking for stories that don't rely on drug-use, profanity, taboos, racism, etc. unless absolutely necessary...

Generally we need the first three chapters and a synopsis from you, as well as a short idea of what age group the story would be appropriate for and why you think your story is unique.

We also use the same snail mail address as well... Carnifex YA, PO Box 1686, Ormond Beach, FL 32175... please include word count and cover letter with your 3 chapters and synopsis. You don't have to include an SASE if you give us an e-mail address as we prefer to contact you with acceptances/rejections that way.
